2023 Annual Report

Jill Gardner,
Board President

Dear Friends,

On the website for the National Council of Nonprofits, there is a wonderful quote:

“Nonprofits embody the best of America. They provide a way for people to work together for the common good, transforming shared beliefs and hopes into action. They give shape to our boldest dreams, highest ideals, and noblest causes.”

We couldn’t agree more. Our communities are held up by the work of nonprofits. In 2023, Medina granted $4.4 million to 185 inspiring organizations. As usual, the majority of our grants, 75%, were for general operating support. Most of our grantees have been long-term partners, and many have received funding for decades. But every year brings new partnerships. In 2023, nearly 11% of our grants went to organizations that are new to us. Highlights of this year were funding so many innovative nonprofits for the first time and seeing our partners again as more meetings and site visits shifted back to being in-person. We had really missed everyone.

Impact Initiative

2023 was also the second year of our Impact Initiative that we featured in our last annual report. Five of Medina’s grantees were selected for this Initiative: Bike Works, Center for Inclusive Entrepreneurship, Community Boat Project, Grays Harbor Youth Works, and Speak With Purpose. A total of $1 million dollars over five years was granted to these organizations above our regular grantmaking budget. Each organization also received professional development funding and support outside of the grant. It has been encouraging to see the ways they have provided support to each other as they expand their work, build new programs, overcome challenges, and go through leadership transitions. They are all making such significant contributions to their communities.

Professional Development Grants

While general operating dollars are most often needed, we have heard for years how challenging it is to raise money for professional development. In 2023, we held our third round of professional development funding. While these grants are small (up to $5,000), they are in addition to any other Medina funding, and they are completely driven by the organization. That flexibility allows organizations to be creative and put the money where it is most needed. Grantees have told us that they raised more money than projected after attending a fundraising training, strengthened their board by creating clearer expectations, improved their overall organizational culture after a communications course, and gained valuable networking and support by attending an in-person conference. We weren’t able to fund all of the requests because the need is so great, but we did fund 22 proposals. We look forward to continuing this process in 2024.

We extend our thanks and admiration to every organization listed in this report. To close, we will leave you with one more quote about the sector’s importance from the National Council of Nonprofits:

“Nonprofits feed, heal, shelter, educate, inspire, enlighten, and nurture people of every age, gender, race, and socioeconomic status, from coast to coast, border to border, and beyond. Every single day.”

With so much gratitude,

Jill Gardner, Board President
